Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit Pope, has become a global symbol of humility, compassion, and interfaith dialogue. His outreach to the Arab and Muslim world stands as one of the defining features of his papacy, marked by historic visits and powerful messages of peace and brotherhood.

A Landmark Visit to the United Arab

Emirates In February 2019, Pope Francis made history as the first Pope to visit the Arabian Peninsula. His journey to Abu Dhabi was centered around the Global Conference of Human Fraternity, where he was joined by Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. Together, they signed the landmark "Document on Human Fraternity", a declaration promoting mutual understanding, coexistence, and rejection of violence in the name of religion. The visit also included a public Mass attended by over 100,000 people, the largest gathering of Christians ever held in the UAE. It was a powerful message of religious tolerance in a region often marked by division.

Historic Pilgrimage to Iraq In March 2021

Pope Francis undertook another unprecedented journey—this time to Iraq, becoming the first Pope to visit the country. Amid security concerns and a fragile post-war environment, the Pope traveled to Baghdad, Erbil, Mosul, and the ancient city of Ur, believed to be the birthplace of the prophet Abraham. A particularly significant moment was his private meeting with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf, a major step toward bridging gaps between the Christian and Shiite Muslim communities. Throughout his visit, Pope Francis called for reconciliation, forgiveness, and the return of displaced Christians to their homela

A Voice for Justice in Palestine

Pope Francis has consistently spoken out on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, affirming the right of both peoples to live in peace and security. He supports a two-state solution and urges the international community to work toward a peaceful resolution. His messages often emphasize the importance of protecting Jerusalem's religious and cultural identity, and he condemns violence against civilians from all sides.

Defender of Refugees and the Displaced

One of the most compassionate actions of his papacy was in 2016, when Pope Francis visited a refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece, and returned to the Vatican with three Syrian Muslim families, offering them safety and shelter. He has repeatedly called on Europe and the world to show solidarity with refugees, especially those fleeing war in Syria, Iraq, and other parts of the Middle East.

A Pope of Bridges, Not Walls.

In his approach to the Arab world, Pope Francis continues to embody his belief that religious faith should unite, not divide. His visits and messages emphasize a shared human dignity that transcends borders and beliefs.

In a world torn by sectarianism, war, and fear, Pope Francis's mission of fraternity—especially among Christians and Muslims—offers a powerful reminder: peace is possible when dialogue replaces division.
