The collapse took place near the towns of Kenieba and Dabia, areas known for their rich gold deposits. Local officials reported that many of the deceased were artisanal miners, including women and children. In addition to the fatalities, several others sustained serious injuries and were evacuated to the hospital in Kéniéba for treatment.
